Dr Martin Kearns
This is the second in our series of interviews with Dr Martin Kearns – Powders Group Director at Sandvik Osprey Limited. Dr Kearns talks about the MIM industry and how a close working relationship with a production house like Indo-MIM can result in improvements in process, design orientation, and material sciences.
Q: What do you see on the MIM horizon over the next two years?
I see no reason why the successful growth of the past decade should not continue in the coming years. There will inevitably be competition from other fabrication methods, but the picture painted at conferences, including the recent MIM2011 meeting is that historic growth rates of 10-15%pa will continue. Regional differences will persist with Asia maintaining highest growth rates benefitting from opportunities in automotive and medical sectors. Overall, there is good cause for continued optimism provided the industry continues to innovate and exploit the advantages of near net shape technology and promote design flexibility. As commodity prices increase and resources become less abundant net shape technologies should indeed become more attractive.
Q: What is your net impression or take-away on your visits to Indo-MIM?
I regard it as one of the privileges of my job that I get to travel to some places that I would never otherwise see, meet people I would not have met and enjoy cultural experiences that I would not have imagined. Over the years, I have alternated visits with our Managing Director, Richard Park, Andrew Coleman and Keith Murray and we have all enjoyed visiting the Bangalore and Dodaballapur sites and witnessing the remarkable growth that has occurred over the last 5 years. Our universal view is of a highly impressive, professional company who consistently surprise us with the scale, variety and ambition of their operations. Clearly there has been a lot of investment in high quality plant infrastructure in recent years – which, together with the speed of response and ‘can-do’ mentality that we know is a characteristic of Indo-MIM’s staff, makes a formidable combination of assets. The addition of specialist processing equipment for the medical sector and the complementary activity in investment casting show us that Indo MIM is not for standing still!
Q5: How did you find working with the R&D wing at Indo-MIM?
Sandvik Osprey has a strong desire to develop specialist products and to explore the boundaries of what is possible with what is still a relatively young technology. Sandvik’s corporate approach is to add value and to offer customers ‘solutions’, not just ‘products’. We therefore welcome those initiatives from Dr Shiv and Sreekanth that seek new products and the challenges of developing new processes when called for. We are part of an organisation with one of the largest metallurgical R&D capabilities in northern Europe so we feel there is scope to do more in future to make distinctive products. We know that speed is of the essence in making new alloys and our pilot facility gives us flexibility for this although I have to say that we are stretched to give the speed of response that we would wish at present. Our ongoing investment in extra capacity will enable us to improve significantly in future and we look forward to more collaboration.

Our booth at 2011 SAE World Congress
The 2011 SAE World Congress was held on April 12, 13 and 14 at Detroit’s Cobo Center.
This annual conference included technical sessions, panel discussions and opportunities for exhibitors to showcase their products. The Ride and Drive was available for all attendees to test drive vehicles on a 10-minute course.
The theme this year was Charging Forward Together – creating a common platform for technology and knowledge sharing.
The World Congress offered a preview of technologies that will be built into the vehicles of tomorrow. With a focus on improving fuel economy and tooling up for alternate energy technology platforms.
INDO-MIM was offered a prominent location near the booths of Ford and Tata Motors – our display efforts here showcased our MIM offerings to the global automotive industry. The booth design was well appreciated by co-exhibitors, sales representatives, visitors, and organizers. Our participation also brought together members of the Indo-MIM sales team from variousUS locations.

Dr Martin Kearns
This time our “Conversations” team meets up with Dr Martin Kearns - Powders Group Director at Sandvik Osprey Limited. Dr Kearns talks about the growth phases of his company and the association with Indo-MIM since inception.
Q: Our readers might benefit from an overview of your company – we could start with that …
Well, Osprey Metals Ltd. was founded in 1974 by three innovative post-graduates at the University in nearby Swansea who invented and went on to register several patents for the Osprey Spray Forming process. In 1984, Sandvik acquired the company outright and has been a supportive parent ever since then. From the late 1980’s the atomising technology developed for Spray Forming was refined and developed to allow manufacture of extremely fine gas atomised powders which were designed for the emerging MIM market.
Q: How is the company placed today in the industry and a global context?
Today, the company’s Powders Group is a leading global producer of powders for MIM and other markets. We export more than 90% of our output and are proud of our reputation for high quality and product development. We are located in a picturesque part of South Wales and have a workforce of ~90 whose hard work is being rewarded with continued growth.
Q: How long does the relationship go back between Sandvik Osprey and Indo-MIM?
It is pleasing to reflect that Sandvik Osprey has been in contact with Indo-MIM since its inception and after checking our dispatch history, I see that we first shipped powder to Bangalore in January 2002 (430L, S2, M2). Through the 1990’s, Sandvik Osprey had been supplying powder to AFT in the US and so it was natural that our products were introduced when the JV in India was established.
Q: Who were the first official visitors to our plant from Sandvik Osprey?
Dr Bob Howells was the first member of the Osprey team to visit in 2002 and it has been a popular destination for us ever since. Sandvik’s business culture values long term, sustainable business and we are therefore delighted to have shared in your impressive growth and to have been supportive in the not so good times.
Having an integrated tooling and production capability is a real advantage when responding to business opportunities and Indo-MIM has been successful in its marketing, product design and development effort.
