Metal Injection Molding (MIM)

Metal Injection Molding (MIM) is an advanced manufacturing process that combines the design flexibility of plastic injection molding with the strength and performance of wrought metals. INDO-MIM Inc. specializes in producing complex, high-precision metal components in medium to high volumes with excellent repeatability and cost efficiency.

MIM is ideal for intricate geometries, thin walls, micro-features, and tight tolerances that are difficult or expensive to achieve through conventional machining or casting.

The MIM Process – Step by Step

  1. Feedstock Preparation: Fine metal powders are blended with a proprietary binder system to create a homogeneous feedstock. This ensures consistent flow behavior and uniform material properties throughout the molding process.
  1. Injection Molding: The feedstock is injected into precision-engineered molds to form the “green part.” This step enables near-net shape production with high dimensional repeatability.
  1. Debinding: The binder material is carefully removed through thermal and/or solvent processes. This produces a fragile “brown part” while maintaining dimensional integrity.
  1. Sintering: The debound parts are sintered at high temperatures in a controlled atmosphere furnace. During sintering, the metal particles fuse together, resulting in a dense, high-strength component with excellent mechanical properties.
  1. Secondary Operations (as required): Depending on application requirements, parts may undergo additional processes such as heat treatment, machining, surface finishing, coating, or assembly.
