INDO-MIM is a leading manufacturer of Metal Injection Molding technology, excelling in capacity, technology, production, and more. Tool design and manufacturing is the heart of the Metal Injection Molding process. Our in-house tooling facility’s expertise is in creating complex tools, which results in contributing to the successful execution of numerous projects.
INDO-MIM tool room Capabilities
At INDO-MIM, we have a dedicated tool room, and all the tooling activities are done under one roof with a wide array of advanced machines such as basic 2-axis to 5axis milling machines, Electrical-Discharge Machine (EDM), Grinding Machines, Wire Cutting machines and advance quality/Measuring equipment’s.
Mold Design:
Mold flow analysis and shrinkage factor calculations are important processes that have to be taken into consideration in the design of molds, given the shrinkage of part that occurs in Metal Injection Molding process.
Mold flow analysis is used for the simulation of molten material flowing within a mold cavity to determine potential problems such as air traps and weld lines, or uneven filling for optimization before actual production. Shrinkage factor calculations are used to predict the dimensional changes that take place when material cools and solidifies, thus ensuring that the final component meets specifications.
Over the decades of experience INDO-MIM has gained expertise in the preparation of precision metal injection molds.
Process of Mold preparation
Mold Materials: Most of our tools are  made from M2 material. The benefits of choosing M2 material include an extended tool life compared to other materials, sustaining up to 350k shots.
Milling                                                                                    Â
CNC Milling is the primary process in the tool making, which involves removing material from a workpiece using rotary cutters. The spindle rotates the cutting tool, such as an end mill, while the workpiece is fed against it. This allows precise shaping, contouring, and sizing of the workpiece.
We are equipped with specialized techniques and tools for machining 60 HRC hard part to match the cavity finish.
EDM in MIM Toolroom:Â
Electrical Discharge Machining(EDM), is a process utilizing controlled electrical sparks to remove metal by erosion. EDM electrodes are made from the materials such as brass, graphite, copper, copper alloys, molybdenum, tungsten and silver.
EDM Electrodes at INDO-MIM:
In our facility, we use two types of electrodes: Graphite and Copper
Selection of Electrode Material:
Graphite: This material is used for the most complex parts, regardless of their size—whether large or tiny. When using graphite, no burrs appear on the tool. However, it is relatively expensive and provides a lower surface finish compared to copper material.
Copper: –Â When using copper, slight burrs appear on the tool. However, it is relatively low cost and provides a higher surface finish compared to Graphite material.
Wire Cutting
The wire serves as the electrode for creating electrical discharge, aiding in achieving precise through-holes in the tool. Typically, wires with diameters ranging from 0.1 to 0.75mm are used, with brass being the main type of wire utilized.
Grinding OperationÂ
Grinding process that uses a grinding wheel as the cutting tool. It is commonly used to remove material from a workpiece, to produce a smooth finish on the surface of the workpiece, or to remove burrs from the surface.
Profile grinding :Grinding facility allow for precision shaping of flat and round pins to meet specific design requirements.
Quality Inspection And assemblyÂ
Quality is crucial in tool design hence, we employ well-equipped advanced equipment for inspections to minimize errors.
