Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) Design Excellence Award is one of the most prestigious platforms in the Powder Metallurgy (PM) & Metal Injection Molding (MIM) for recognizing achievement in this industry.

“INDO-MIM won 5 Award of Distinction this year at MPIF Conference

DISTINCTION AWARDS

  • An Award of Distinction in the Automotive—Transmission Category for MIM components, an Award of Distinction has been given to Indo-MIM Pvt. Ltd. for an oil spray piston cooler. The parts are used in the engine of heavy vehicles and were previously made by machining, which was very challenging for such a complex shape. The parts are made using heat-treated MIM-4605, have a density of 7.5 g/cm3, an apparent hardness of 42–48 HRC, and tensile strength of 1550 MPa. Parts are made in a single cavity mold and placed horizontally with a unique elevated parting line. Holes are formed by two different slide pins at different angles in the tool, and the side core has to travel through the center pin with a delay mechanism. The wall thickness is very thin at the intersection of the hole end and pin exit areas. The parts are staged on a smooth and flat ceramic tray for sintering, and profile gauges are used to qualify the sintered parts.
  • An Award of Distinction has been given to INDO-MIM Pvt. Ltd. for the Electrical/Electronic component—In the Electronics/Electrical Components category for MIM components an Award of Distinction has been awarded to Indo-MIM Pvt. Ltd. for a ceramic sensor used in an electronic device. The parts have a U-shaped geometry with an open slot at the rear end and a through-hole at the front, with another hole passing horizontally through the slot. Most of the part is hollow which makes it complex. The parts are made in a single-cavity mold with one side core. Staging is key to avoid distortion and minimize secondary processes and the stagers are used from molding through sintering. The parts are made using MIM-316L stainless steel. The parts were previously made by machining.
  • An Award of Distinction in the Firearm Segment—In the Aerospace/Military/Firearms Category for MIM components, an Award of Distinction has been given to INDO-MIM Pvt. Ltd. for a frame chassis, part of a pistol assembly. The parts are made using MIM-17-4 PH in the H900 condition. The parts are made in a single cavity mold with five slides. Sequential slide opening is used to avoid cracks in the green parts. Parts are sintered on custom ceramic setters and sized prior to the H900 thermal treatment. Prior to MIM the parts were machined from bar stock by the customer. The MIM parts meet 80% of the required part features with the remainder being machined by the customer. This reduced the machining cycle by 70%.
  • An Award of Distinction in the Lock Application— In the Hardware/Appliances Category for MIM components, an Award of Distinction has been awarded to Indo-MIM Pvt. Ltd. for a knob shaft, clutch, knob shield, core plug, core body, and control sleeve actuator used in door locks. The knob shaft has a wall thickness of 0.8 mm in most areas. Intricate profiles, multiple holes, and sectional differences add to the complexity of the part. The top portion has an aesthetic requirement as it is visible to the end user. The part is made in a multi-cavity tool with two slide cores. The clutch is a circular part with a gear profile that mates with the main part in service. It is made in a 4-cavity open-shut mold with a flat parting line. The knob shield is circular with two protrusions that have blind threads and has thin walls. It is made in a 4-cavity open-shut tool. The core plug is one of the more complex parts with multiple holes, thin walls between holes, and varying sectional thickness. It is made in a multi-cavity tool with two side cores around the component. The core body has a unique 8-shaped body with varying sectional thicknesses, an eccentric head, and three open slots. It is made in a multi-cavity tool with two side cores around the component. The control sleeve actuator is cylindrical with a gear geometry on the outer diameter. It is made in a 4-cavity tool and the part is placed vertically with a flat parting line. All of the parts are made using MIM-17-4 PH stainless steel age hardened to H900 specification. The MIM parts replaced components that previously were machined.
  • An Award of Distinction in the Hydraulic Application— An Award of Distinction has been given to Indo-MIM Pvt. Ltd. in the Industrial Motors/Controls & Hydraulics Category for MIM components for a casing and ground used in industrial gas sensors. Both parts are made using a 4-cavity tool. The casing is a complex part with thin walls, sectional differences, and three threaded holes on the outer walls. The ground has many holes and threads. Flat setters are used from the molding stage through sintering. Both parts are made using MIM-Fe-50% Ni due to the need for high magnetic permeability and low coercive field strength.
